It was not a good day for the women seeds as four of them – Pi Hongyan of France, Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva, Germany’s Juliane Schenk and Yao Jie of Holland – were all ousted on the second day of the YONEX French Open Super Series on Thursday.

Third seed Pi, who was hoping to win the crown in front of her home fans, was outplayed by Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Elizabeth Cann, who won 21-13, 21-12 I  30 minutes.

Cann, a four-time English national champion, will now play Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, who upset seventh seed Nedelcheva 21-15, 21-16.

Schenk, who won the Dutch Open last month, was seeded fifth but was shown no respect by China’s Liu Xin in their second round encounter. Liu, who lost the Denmark Open final five days ago, was in dominant form as she crushed the German 21-16, 21-17.

Salakjit Ponsana, who created a big upset in Denmark when she defeated defending champion Tine Baun, continued her good form when she ousted fourth seed Jie 21-8, 21-19. Her encounter with Liu promises to be a cracker.

Top seed Wang Yihan of China faces Russia’s Ella Diehl, the sixth seed, for a place in the semi-finals.

Wang defeated Swiss qualifier Sabrina Jaquet 21-11-, 21-8 in 28 minutes while Diehl was stretched by a determined Larisa Griga. The Ukraine player lost the first game 21-11 but fought back to take the second 21-19. In the decider, Diehl upped the pace to score a 21-14 victory to book her place in the last eight.

Baun, who is seeded second, reached the final eight when she defeated Switzerland’s Jeanine Cicognini 21-16, 21-11. She will next play China’s Li Xuerui, who fought hard to defeat Germany’s Olga Konon. The eighth seed was taken to the limit before winning 21-18, 19-21, 21-18.
