TOP TWO SEEDS MADE TO SWEAT BEFORE REACHING QUARTER-FINALS
The top two seeds in the YONEX French Open Super Series men’s doubles category were made to work hard before reaching the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, who won the Denmark Open on Sunday, were given a stern test by Malaysia’s Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang.
Wei Shem-Kok Siang, who are in their nation’s back-up squad, gave a good account of themselves before falling 15-21, 21-14, 21-16 in 49 minutes.
Boe-Mogensen will meet meet Flandy Limpele-Simon Mollyhus, the Indonesian-Danish pairing who defeated eighth seeded English pair Chris Langridge-Robin Middleton 21-17, 21-11.
Second seeds Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan, were forced to work a bit harder to ensure their place in the last eight. Croatian pair Zvonimir Durkinjak and Zvonimir Hoelbling took them to three games before the reigning Olympic champions won 21-17, 14-21, 21-13.
They will meet Malaysia’s sixth seed Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen, who defeated French qualifiers Maxime Renault-Sylvain Ternon 21-14, 21-14.
In the women’s doubles, top seeded Bulgarian-Russian combination of Petya Nedelcheva-Anastasia Russkikh, cruised into the quarter-finals after beating France’s Audrey Fontaine-Léa Palermo 21-13, 21-16. After receiving a first round by, the top seed were glad to be in action and didn’t waste anytime booking their quarter-finals tickets.
They will now Line Damkjaer Kruse-Mie Schjott-Kristensen of Denmark. The Danish duo upset eighth seeded Swedish pair Emilie Lennartsson-Emma Wenberg 26-24, 17-21, 21-17.
Russia’s second seeds Valeria Sorokina-Nina Vislova had an easier time when they defeated Poland’s Malgorzata Kurdelska-Natalia Pocztowiak 21-18, 21-16.
In the mixed doubles, top seeds Hendra Adripa Gunawan-Vita Marissa of Indonesia defeated Russia’s Vitaliy Durkin-Nina Vislov 12-21, 21-18, 21-15. They will now meet Germany’s Johannes Schöttler-Sandra Marinello, who defeated French qualifiers Lucas Claerbout-Charlie Sehier 21-13, 21-10.
Second seeds Robert Mateusiak-Nadieska Zieba of Poland, meanwhile, outplayed another French duo – Ronan Labar-Wenny Rasidi – 21-11, 21-11 to set up a meeting with Denmark’s Mikkel Delbo Larsen-Mie Schjott-Kristensen.
The Danish duo had to come back from a one-game deficit against Ukraine’s Dmytro Zavadsky- Mariya Diptan before registering a 16-21, 21-16, 21-16 victory.
