China’s Wang Yihan won the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier title on Sunday to deny team mate Wang Shixian a third title of the month.
It was also sweet revenge for Wang Yihan (right), who lost last week’s PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries final to her compatriot, who also took over her world No. 1 ranking after winning in Kuala Lumpur.
Wang Yihan’s 21-14, 21-18 victory in the first OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier event was worth US$90,000 and meant she has now beaten Wang Shixian three times in five meetings.
It was obvious Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan, while a cut above their opponents in Seoul, were not at their best as this was their 14th and 15th match of the month respectively.
The long rallies in the opening game effected the pace match as the players were not as explosive as they normally are while each made more numerous unforced errors.
Chasing her third title of the year after winning in Taipei earlier this month and Kuala Lumpur last week, Wang Shixian only led twice in the opening game when she took the first point and then five points in a row to lead 6-1.
Wang Yihan then upped the tempo to take the next seven points to lead 8-6. It was a lead she never relinquished as she went from 10-10 to 15-11 before winning six of the next nine points to win the opening game 21-14.
The second game was much closer as the players traded points with Wang Yihan leading all the way until Wang Shixian took three points in a row to lead 9-7.
She went into the half game interval 11-8 ahead and although Wang Yihan drew level at 11-11, that was the signal for Wang Shixian to up her game and she reeled off three quick points to make it 14-11.
The world No. 1 continued to lead until 17-15 when the third seed found an extra gear to win the six of the next seven points to clinch the match.
Women’s singles: Wang Yihan (China) bt Wang Shixian (China) 21-14, 21-18.
