Taufik and Simon to miss start of Olympic campaign
Former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and his Indonesian team mate Simon Santoso have withdrawn from the YONEX SUNRISE Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold tournament which begins with the qualifying rounds on Tuesday.
The duo, who competed in the recent YONEX SUNRISE India Open Superseries tournament in New Delhi, thus, will miss the first tournament of the Olympic qualifying campaign.
They are the only notable withdrawals in a meet which will see the likes of world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, world champion Chen Jin of China and his team mate Bao Chunlai, former Asian champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Japan’s Kazushi Yamada and Sho Sasaki.
The good for Malaysia is that Taufik’s withdrawal means former 100PLUS National Junior Circuit Grand Finals winner Zulfafli Zulkifli earns a ticket to the main draw, where he will meet team mate Daren Liew.
Chong Wei, who has reached the finals of all five tournaments he has entered in 2011 – VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals 2010, PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries and VICTOR Korea Open Superseries, YONEX All England Superseries and YONEX SUNRISE India Open Superseries – will start as the favourite to win his fifth title of the year. His only loss this year came in Korea.
